Questions Birth Parents Frequently Ask:

Q What is Adoption?
A Adoption is a legal arrangement in which a child is placed with adoptive parents who raise the child as a member of their own family. There are two parts to adoption. First, the birth parents give legal permission for the child to be adopted. Second, a couple wanting to adopt a child must apply and be accepted to a licensed child placement agency such as Colorado Christian Services. A thorough family assessment and background check is done to make sure that the couple will be able to provide a loving, nurturing, and stable home for the child.

Q Don't children belong with their biological parents?
A Unplanned pregnancies are just that...unplanned. Sometimes birth parents do not feel ready to raise a child. They turn to adoptive parents who can't have children biologically, but have the necessary resources to raise a child. Placing a child for adoption is one way of meeting that child's needs.

Q What if my family and friends pressure me to parent my baby?
A Ultimately the decision to place your baby for adoption or to raise the child yourself is a decision you will have to make. It is a very big decision that you should have to make only after you have carefully considered your options.

Q What if I want an open adoption?
A At Colorado Christian Services, the birth family and the adoptive family together determine the degree of openness. Each plan for contact is developed on an individual basis. Most cases involve the ongoing exchange of information, such as pictures and letters. However, some people have continued physical contact throughout the child's life.

Q How do birth parents feel after adoption?
A The birth of a baby is a very emotional time. When a woman is thinking about placing her baby for adoption, it is an even more emotional time. It is normal to be sad after relinquishing a child. Yet, most birth mothers also feel at peace after the relinquishment, knowing that they made the best possible decision for their baby.

Questions Adoptive Families Frequently Ask :

Q How long must we wait?
A The average wait for an infant adoption is 18 months to 2 years. However, in our Christian Family Adoption Program, we will assist you in actively marketing yourselves as adoptive parents. We will teach you how to use resumes and advertising in order to to come into contact with prospective birth mothers. This may decrease the time you spend waiting to be chosen as adoptive parents.

Q How much will it cost to adopt, and when are the fees due?
A Each type of adoption has a different fee schedule according to the services provided. We will be happy to provide you with the fee schedule for the type of adoption you are pursuing. Adoption fees are the responsibility of the adopting family. Each individual fee is due at the time the service is provided.

Q Does Colorado Christian Services assist in out-of-state adoptions?
A Yes. We work cooperatively with out-of-state agencies in order to assist our clients who reside outside the state of Colorado.

Q What level of openness must we accept?
A The level of openness is unique to each adoptive placement. Your caseworker will provide counseling to you and the birth family in order to reach a level of openness that is agreeable to all parties involved.

Q Do we need a lawyer to complete the adoption process?
A Every state has different requirements. At Colorado Christian Services we work with an attorney to ensure that your adoption meets all state legal requirements.
