What is adoption?
Adoption is a legal arrangement in which a child is placed with adoptive parents who raise the child as a member of their own family. Adoption involves two parts! First, the birth mother and father give legal permission for the child to be adopted. Second, a couple wanting to adopt a child must apply and be accepted as prospective adoptive parents by a licensed child-placement agency such as Colorado Christian Services. A thorough family assessment and background check are done to make sure that the couple will be able to provide a loving, nurturing, and stable home for the child.
Don’t children belong with their biological parents?
Unplanned pregnancies are just that… unplanned. Sometimes birth parents do not feel ready to raise a child, so they look to adoptive parents who can’t have children biologically.
What if my parents and friends pressure me to parent my baby?
The decision to place your child for adoption or to raise the baby yourself is one that you will have to make. It is a very big decision that you should make only after you have carefully considered your options. Most importantly, it is your decision.
What if I want an open adoption?
Most of our birth mothers choose to have an open/semi-open adoption plan. The birth family and the adoptive family determine together the degree of openness. Each plan for contact is developed on an individual basis. Most cases involve the ongoing sharing of information, such as pictures and letters. In many cases, the birth family and the adoptive family maintain direct contact throughout the child’s life.
How do birth parents feel after adoption?
The birth of a baby is a very emotional time. And when a woman is considering placing her baby for adoption, it is an even more emotional time. It is normal to be sad after placing a child for adoption. However, most birth parents who have placed a baby for adoption say that they feel at peace after the relinquishment, knowing that they made the best possible decision for their baby. Every situation is different, and every case is unique.
